How to buy a new car in Malaysia in 2026: step-by-step guide
Buying a new car in Malaysia takes six steps: choose the model and variant, test drive it, get an on-the-road (OTR) quotation, apply for a hire-purchase loan (usually up to 90% of the price over up to nine years), arrange insurance, then settle the balance and collect the car once JPJ registration is done. With complete documents, loan approval typically takes one to three working days, and delivery depends on stock.

1. Understand the on-the-road price
New cars in Malaysia are quoted on-the-road (OTR) without insurance. The OTR figure already includes registration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the number plates and the first year of road tax. Insurance is the one running cost that is not in the price, so budget for it separately. Prices for Peninsular Malaysia differ from Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan and Langkawi, which is why every price on this site is marked as Peninsular OTR.
2. Shortlist the model and variant
Decide on body size, drivetrain and powertrain first. A 2WD variant costs less and uses less fuel; AWD adds grip and a higher specification. If you can charge at home, a plug-in hybrid or an EV can cut your fuel bill sharply. Our price list shows every variant with a monthly estimate, and the finance calculator lets you change the deposit and tenure to see what fits.
3. Take a test drive
A test drive is free and carries no obligation. Bring a valid driving licence, pick the model and a time slot, and drive the car on the roads you actually use: a stretch of highway for refinement and a car park for visibility and parking sensors. Try the rear seats and the boot with your family or your usual load.
4. Get a written quotation
Ask for the OTR price of the exact variant and colour, an insurance estimate, the booking fee, the expected delivery date and whatever the current launch package or promotion includes. A written quotation makes it easy to compare offers and avoids surprises at delivery.
5. Apply for the car loan
Most buyers finance the car with a hire-purchase loan. Banks generally lend up to 90% of the OTR price for up to nine years, so plan for a deposit of at least 10%. You will need your MyKad, your latest three months of payslips or bank statements, and an EA form or employment letter; self-employed buyers usually provide business registration and six months of statements. With complete documents most applications get an answer within one to three working days, and we submit to several banks to find the best rate for your profile.
Since 1 June 2026 the Hire-Purchase (Amendment) Act 2026 requires new agreements to charge interest on the reducing balance instead of the old flat rate, with banks given until 31 March 2027 to complete the switch. Ask for the effective interest rate so you can compare offers on the same basis.
6. Insurance, road tax and delivery
Comprehensive insurance must be in place before the car can be registered, and your no-claim discount transfers from your previous car. Once the bank releases payment and JPJ registration is complete, the car is prepared, inspected and handed over with the warranty booklet. Every new Jaecoo and Omoda is covered by a 7-year or 150,000 km manufacturer warranty.
Trading in your current car
If you have a car to sell, ask for a trade-in valuation at the same time as your quotation. The agreed value goes straight towards the new car, and any outstanding loan on the old one is settled as part of the deal, which saves you dealing with a separate buyer.
